The current printed form of Bengali alphabet first appeared in 1778 when Charles Wilkins developed printing in Bengali. There are some differences in pronunciation and vocabulary between the Bengali of Bangladesh and the Bengali spoken in India. It is recognized as a secondary language in Karachi in Pakistan. Bengali is the official language of the India states of West Bengal, Tripura and Assam, and the second official language of Jharkhand state. One example of a final cluster in a standard Bengali word would be গঞ্জ gônj, which is found in names of hundreds of cities and towns across Bengal, including নবাবগঞ্জ Nôbabgônj and মানিকগঞ্জ Manikgônj. However, when morpheme boundaries come into play, vowel length can sometimes distinguish otherwise homophonous words. The script has been adopted for writing the Sylheti language as well, replacing the use of the old Sylheti Nagori script. Meitei, a Sino-Tibetan language used in the Indian state of Manipur, has been written in the Bengali abugida for centuries, though Meitei Mayek (the Meitei abugida) has been promoted in recent times. In spite of some modifications in the nineteenth century, the Bengali spelling system continues to be based on the one used for Sanskrit, and thus does not take into account some sound mergers that have occurred in the spoken language. For example, in মই moj “ladder” and in ইলিশ iliʃ “Hilsa fish,” the independent form of the vowel ই is used (cf. the dependent form ি).

The Bengali consonant clusters (যুক্তব্যঞ্জন juktôbênjôn) are usually realised as ligatures, where the consonant which comes first is put on top of or to the left of the one that immediately follows. In addition to the inherent-vowel-suppressing hôsôntô, three more diacritics are commonly used in Bengali. The abugida nature of Bengali consonant graphemes is not consistent, however.

The Bengali script is derived from Brahmi, one of the two ancient Indian scripts, and particularly from the eastern variety of Brahmi. The first, second, and third persons are expressed through six forms because they have both ordinary and honorific referents. But the dialects of sylhet, noakhali and chittagong are so different from Bangali that it is best to consider these spoken forms as separate dialects. Bangla also borrowed from sanskrit, the words known as tatsama and tadbhava, English and other languages in the modern Bangla phase. Consonant conjuncts are simplified in loan words in spoken language. Although the written language of West Bengal and Bangladesh is more or less similar, spoken Bangla differs widely.
